The single unit showed weakness in early European trading Friday, slumping to a 2-week low against the pound and a 1-week low against the franc shortly after a report showed that Germany’s economic growth unexpectedly stagnated in the fourth quarter of 2009.

Forex news: euro reaches multi-day highs against majors

During early Monday trading the European single currency climbed to new multi-day highs against the currencies of US, UK and Japan. In addition the euro also strengthened against the franc during this time period.

The euro advanced against the US dollar in Asian deals on Monday. At present, the euro-dollar pair is trading at a 4-day high of 1.4338 with 1.441 seen as the next target level. The pair was worth 1.4312 at last week's close.

Gold slips to $930 level as dollar strengthened

On Thursday bullion slipped toward $930 per ounce, weakening as the greenback strengthened broadly ahead of monthly U.S. jobs data that investors expect to provide more clarity on the pace of economic recovery.

At 6:41 a.m. Thursday morning spot gold steadied at $932.05. EDT, down from $939.95 late Wednesday in New York. Gold found support above $930 as investors awaited U.S. non-farm payrolls data at 8:30 a.m. EDT which could dictate moves for the dollar and gold.

Nomura loss surpassed all the expectations reaching 709.4 billion yen volume

Japan's largest brokerage, Nomura, reported 709.4 billion yen ($7.3 billion) losses for the fiscal year ended in March 2009, setting the country’s historic fiscal-year loss, while year-ago period revealed 67.8 billion yen loss volume. 

This fiscal year loss surpassed all the expectations. According to data provided by FactSet Research, the market expected 611.6 billion yen net loss for the fiscal year ended 2009, on average.
