32% of Americans steal neighbors’ Wi-Fi with many of them eavesdropping

American people are “borrowing” their neighbor’s Wi-Fi connection without any permission and asking. According to a new national survey about 32% of the polled say they mooch a neighbor's unencrypted Wi-Fi connection. That's nearly double the 18% who said they borrowed Wi-Fi in a 2008 poll.

"The reality is that many consumers have not taken the steps to protect themselves," said Kelly Davis-Felner, marketing director at the Wi-Fi Alliance, a non-profit trade group that commissioned the surveys.

Why use of Wi-Fi drains the power of mobile phones

Researchers at the University of Texas found that most Wi-Fi enabled access points don't properly implement the protocol designed to reduce the power drain on mobile devices. As a result the performance gets inconsistent. However, the researchers believe the issue can be addressed successfully.

It is known that the power saving mode allows mobile devices to shift to a "sleep" mode between packet requests. But the practice shows that most devices stay in a fully powered up state until the completion of the entire transfer.

AT&T did agree to provide wireless connections to the iPad tablet computer but Randall Stephenson says there will unlikely be many subscriptions because users will give their preference to Wi-Fi or prepaid services.
