America against Google and Verizon: who is more demonic?

Free Press, ColorofChange.org, Credo Action, MoveOn.org and the Progressive Change Campaign Committee will go on a rally to protest a recent proposal by Google and Verizon Communications at Google's headquarters in Mountain View, California, Friday.

The organizers of the rally hope to convince Google, which has long voiced support for net neutrality, to abandon the joint proposal with Verizon. Critics of the Google/Verizon net neutrality proposal have called it a weak alternative to other efforts aiming to prohibit broadband providers from selectively blocking Web traffic.

Yesterday users worldwide were reporting outages on a number of Google services, including Gmail, Google News, Google Docs, Google Calendar, Google Analytics, Google Maps, Google AdSense, and Google Search. Google in turn admitted that there was some problem which has not been solved. The problem was ascribed to the traffic slowdown on a routing mistake.

According to Bango, the analytics vendor, in February the mobile users from the US have accounted for 29% of Web traffic and 57% of payments worldwide. As a result the US became the country with the highest rate of Web browsing and payments conducted from mobile phones leaving behind the UK, the number-one at the end of 2008.
