As the time for UIGEA to take effect is coming near and financial institutions are not authorized yet to address “illegal” gambling activities the role is successfully performed by the authorities themselves. Two weeks ago on September 4, federal prosecutors took actions against the online gambling community.

Online gambling will get the second chance

It has been announced that a Harvard Study exposed focus on the Family's (Citizen Link) claim that gambling online is more addictive than land based casino gambling. 

The US 3rd Circuit Court of Appeals has notified lawyers of the Interactive Media & Gaming Association (iMEGA) and the US Department of Justice that the Court is ready to consider the case of iMEGA’s challenge to the Unlawful Internet Gambling Enforcement Act of 2006 (UIGEA).

Anurag Dikshit’s PartyGaming settles with U.S. and reports 61% profit gains

Anurag Dikshit founded online gambling company PartyGaming reported that it is near to complete the negotiations with the U.S. government. According to the company CEO Jim Ryan no company executives are expected to enter a criminal plea with the amount of fine to be imposed on PartyGaming to account for about $150 million, less than earlier expected $300 million.

iMEGA prevented from providing more evidences against UIGEA

Representatives of the US federal government were found to be restraining information necessary for a fair and responsible court decision regarding the UIGEA issue. The act was sued by Interactive Media Entertainment and Gaming Association (iMEGA) for its vagueness. Department of Justice attorney would not give consent for iMEGA to update its briefs by including difficulties being caused at state lotteries by the online gambling ban.

Barney Frank plans to introduce a bill against UIGEA in March

Barney Frank is getting ready to propose anti-Unlawful Internet Gambling Enforcement Act (UIGEA) passed in 2006 next month.

Frank has been opposing this act ever since it was passed. Frank’s vocal opposition to the UIGEA was reinforced recently. In one of the interviews and conferences as a new Chairman of the House Financial Services Committee, Frank told that he planned to propose an online gaming legislation making online poker games legal.

PartyGaming founder Anurag Dikshit is to settle with US authorities

Several UK services have announced PartyGaming co-founder Anurag Dikshit to have agreed to plead guilty to one or more charges related to illegal online wagering, and paying US authorities a fine reported as $300 million (£196 million). 

Dikshit owns 27% of PartyGaming, husband and wife DeLeon and Parasol retain 14% of the company each. Dikshit, born in India, is under the risk a jail term of up to two years by entering the US to make the plea agreement. Parasol and DeLeon, are reported not to be seeking to negotiate with the US.

December 1, 2009 was chosen by the Department of the Treasury and the Federal Reserve Board as a deadline for the financial institutions to stop their money transfers for online gambling. Yesterday FRB has released a joint final rule to implement the Unlawful Internet Gambling Enforcement Act of 2006. The Act prohibits gambling businesses from knowingly accepting payments in connection with unlawful Internet gambling, including payments made through credit cards, electronic funds transfers, and checks.
