Yahoo Japan expands its video offering with new TV shows

Yahoo Japan Corp has partnered with local media companies to expand the scope of video delivery services in Japan with the addition of a pay-per-view shows.

Starting early September, GyaO Corp, Yahoo’s Japanese unit, will be adding dramas from public broadcaster NHK and cartoons and other programs from TV Tokyo Corp to its pay-for-view streaming service, charging several hundred yen per show.

Besides, the partnership with NHK and TV Tokyo allows GyaO to offer programming from all major television broadcasters.

Apple wants to rent TV shows to users off iTunes for 48 hours

Apple Inc is negotiating a deal with News Corp, Walt Disney and other media corporations to rent TV shows to viewers for 99 cents through iTunes, according to the sources with the knowledge of the matter. The talks are aimed at allowing viewers to rent network programming off Apple's iTunes store for 48 hours.

Meantime, the sources also report that a number of companies including NBC and CBS do not seem to be too happy about the offering because they believe it would undercut revenue they already earn through iTunes.

CBS becomes the last major US broadcaster to come to Hulu

The number one US broadcaster CBS Corp is negotiating with Hulu to bring some of its TV shows to the popular Web video service, as announced by CBS CEO Les Moonves.

Moonves reported that the talks are held with Hulu Plus, a paid for subscription service which the online video company launched in June charging users $9.

To date CBS is the only major broadcaster who hasn’t yet placed its shows on Hulu. According to reports from comScore Hulu is one of the fastest growing TV sites since its launch in 2007 with around 43.5 million viewers in May.

Wetpaint launches new service to measure a brand's online popularity

Web site creation service Wetpaint has launched a measurement system TV Fandex that tracks the level of "fan engagement" of popular TV shows on Facebook, Twitter, Google, and Webpaint's own network of 1.5 million user-created fan sites.

Although there are existing ways to measure a brand's online popularity, including BuzzMetrics from Nielsen, the parent company of The Hollywood Reporter, the TV Fandex is the first system created specifically around providing comparison of TV series interest among social media networks.

Ordinary people to trail celebrities in a new Twitter TV show

Recent reports reveal that Twitter is fastening its eyes on the TV sector. Joining forces with LA-based production companies Reveille Productions and Brillstein Entertainment Partners, Twitter plans to launch an unscripted show that will put "ordinary people on the trail of celebrities in a revolutionary competitive format."
