New variant of Zeus trojan cheats users

Trusteer, the security firm, is now warning of a new variant of the Zeus malware trojan that imitates the Verified by Visa and MasterCard SecureCode enrollment screen to erase sensitive data and passwords from PC users.

The injected enrollment screen prompts users to enter their social security number, credit or debit card number, expiration date, and PIN or CSV code.

According to the Trusteer’s study of 10,000 PCs, the majority of them are not able to recognize trojans, one of the most dangerous globally password-stealer.

As security company Trusteer found, a stealthy piece of malware waiting for PC users to log in to bank websites, Zeus, can be detected in only 23% of cases by AV programs. So, even AV programs with up-to-date malware signatures are mainly unable to detect the infection.

Trusteer announced that last year 10 financial institutions employed its Rapport to protect customers and their personally identifiable information (PII). Central Bank, a regional bank in Kentucky, is the latest customer to use Rapport. The browser security product has been offered free of charge to the customers of seven banks in the US, Canada, and UK, as well as two credit unions and one brokerage firm.

Trusteer has identified a new phishing attack method

A new phishing attack method that infiltrates secure website sessions was found by Trusteer.

It is noted that it was designed to trick users. This process looks the following way. Users were tricked into surrendering confidential information after they have logged on to an online banking, brokerage, or other sensitive web site. Moreover, this technique, dubbed In Session Phishing, may cause unpredictable results.
