Smartphone users are increasing, but Americans still prefer simple cellphones

According to a new survey from the Pew Internet and American Life Project more and more American users have smartphones. However, a significant 40% of them still prefer simple mobile phones to make calls and do text messaging with no need in an app store or Angry Birds.

The survey found that over 35% of adult Americans use some models of smartphone including an iPhone, BlackBerry, Android, Windows Phone 7, or WebOS device.

The Mobile World Cup contest was arranged by LG in New York for 26 contestants from 13 countries last week. The grand prize for the overall performance was taken by the South Korean team while a Portuguese player set a new texting world record.

There were two competitors in each team including one who specialized in numeric keypads, the other in QWERTY. The goal of the games were to measure texting speed while the efficiency was also a priority.

SMS messaging helps smokers quit their bad habit

 Text messaging can help smokers quit the habit, according to an international study.

A review of four trials conducted in New Zealand, Britain and Norway, found that programs to help people stop smoking that included text-messaged advice doubled the chances that smokers would be able to kick the habit for up to a year.

The trials, involving 2,600 smokers, used text messages as a way to give smokers daily advice and encouragement and also offered support when quitters needed it the most.

The results of new On Your Side® survey, released today by Nationwide Insurance, showed that 8 in 10 Americans surveyed this month say they would support legislation restricting cell phone use while driving. According to the survey, conducted Aug. 5-9, 2009, by Harris Interactive, 80 % of Americans favor a ban on texting while driving, while two thirds favor a ban on cell phone calls, and more than half say they would support a ban on cell phone use altogether.
