Blind people can read SMS messages with new Nokia application

Nokia has introduced a special application for mobile phones that allows blind people to read text messages on their mobile devices. The application requires the user’s phone to have a vibration mode as it turns the characters of a text message into Braille.

The Braille Reader turns on immediately after the message is received. But the user needs to hold their finger onto the screen before the application will start reading the SMS out letter by letter in Braille. When the user takes their finger off the screen the reading pauses.

The application was developed by Nokia in association with Tampere University in Finland and the Finnish Federation of Visual Impairment.
