Monday, Internet travel companies conquered the first of several pending legal battles to roll back tax assessments by California cities claiming they owe tens of millions of dollars in occupancy taxes.


Los Angeles County Superior Court Judge Carolyn Kuhl granted a request by Priceline.com Inc, Expedia Inc, Trip Network Inc, Orbitz LLC and Travelocity.com LP, Hotels.com LP and Hotwire Inc to repeal $21.3 million in taxes, interest and penalties assessed by the city of Anaheim over the previous nine years.

MoneyGram International, Inc. announced its fourth quarter of 2008 results. The outcomes show that the Company has expanded its global agent network by 23 percent comparing to the same period of the last year. Its money transfer transaction volume reached $391.0 million of unrestricted assets (increase of 8 percent from $368.6 million last year). The full money transfer revenue for the year made $1.0 billion (raise of 18 percent).

Personal bankruptcies in the U.S. increased from 573,000 to 1,064,927

A recent survey conducted by FindLaw.com revealed that 12% of Americans have either filed or are considering the possibility to file for bankruptcy. According to the figures provided by the National Bankruptcy Research Center within the last three years the number of consumer bankruptcy filings increased almost two times from 573,000 in 2006 to 1,064,927 in 2008.

In the United States, e-commerce vendors have been exempted from collection of taxes by the Internet moratorium act. Yet, some states are already reaching out to these vendors as source of fiscal revenue. The state of New York, one of the most important e-commerce players, recently modified its tax code and expanded the definition of the word "vendor;" this new definition seems to embrace those selling goods and services over the Internet.
