Arizona's expected to gain up to $708 million by 2012 by taxing more

Arizona could gain as much as $708 million in 2012 by taxing more Internet, Home Shopping Network, catalog and other out-of-state sales, according to the National Conference of State Legislatures. 

 

The catch: It would have to greatly simplify its sales-tax structure, with changes approved by state and federal lawmakers.

Online retailers can have their taxes waived under ITRP

Online retailers in North Carolina can be freed from taxes and penalties in case they sign an agreement by August 31 to start collecting sales tax. The North Carolina Department of Revenue said it is working with ecommerce retailers who operate affiliate programs in the state to resolve issues of tax liability.

Any retailer that did not register for sales and use tax as a result of an affiliate program in North Carolina at any time is eligible to participate in the program, called the Internet Transactions Resolution Program (ITRP).

 Henry Samueli, a co-founder of Broadcom Corp., testified on Tuesday that he was not aware of the fact that the actions of his company were illegal. He admitted that the semiconductor company awarded thousands of stock option grants to employees in the years after the company's initial public offering.

Samueli, 55, testified as a defense witness in the federal fraud trial of Broadcom's former chief financial officer, William Ruehle, who is accused of illegally backdating stock options. Ruehle has pleaded not guilty to 14 counts of fraud and conspiracy.

The repeal of the law that would tax personal usage of business cell phones is recommended by the U.S. Internal Revenue Service.

Nielsen showed that the funds spent on advertising in 2008 by tax services have reached $220 million, which is an 11% increase from 2007.

On Monday the Congressional Budget Office released the report that shows the U.S. budget deficit stood for about $1 trillion during the first six months of this fiscal year which began on October 1, according to Reuters. The report says that the government incurred $953 billion in red ink from October through March including $290 billion for the Troubled Asset Relief Program which is three times more than the deficit of 2008 that accounted for $313 billion.
