Visa has started participating in a test program that will enable consumers pay for some New York subway tickets by tapping a credit card or a smartphone at the turnstile.

The program, that was initially commenced by MasterCard Inc, and was exclusive only to MasterCard users, however now it is open to Visa.

A new mobile POS acceptance app from CreditCall, CardEase Mobile, is now providing fully secured Chip & PIN (EMV) transactions on BlackBerry and other smartphones.

The app is to be available since this fall.

As showed the new study from Compete, rising number of people are increasingly using their smartphones for local search, social networking and gaming. 

About 30% of smartphone owners has called or stopped into a local business after finding it using a local search application.

According to the research from Gartner, Google's Android grabbed the fourth place in the first quarter in the number of smartphones sold which use it. Android thus overtook Microsoft's Windows Mobile leaving Google well placed amid the increasing popularity of mobile browsing as handsets look set to soon surpass computers for accessing the web.

 While the Internet is being bucked up with the speculations over Nokia’s possible purchase of Palm some observers express their notions saying that the transaction is worthless and not cost-effective neither for the Finnish mobile phone maker nor for any other big player in the industry. They cite several reasons why the acquisition may not happen.
