Improvement in optimism index signals that the worst is likely over, says NFIB

An industry group said on Tuesday, U.S. small business sentiment improved last month on hopes that the worst of the country's recession was over, but conditions remain very weak.

The National Federation of Independent Business said its optimism index improved by 2.1 points to 88.6 in August, thanks to improved expectations for future business and real sales volume. August's level was 7.6 points higher than the recent trough in March, which was the second-lowest reading since the series began in 1973.
