Citi customers are advised to upgrade iPhone app to evade data breach

On Monday the Wall Street Journal reported a glitch in the mobile banking app provided by Citi for iPhones which makes the sensitive information to be stored on the devices or PCs. After this report Citigroup Inc provided a statement where it said that the glitch had been fixed.

Citi spokeswoman Natalie Riper said on Monday its U.S. Citi Mobile iPhone banking program may have also saved account information on personal computers that customers hooked up to their phones.

China becomes stricter towards cybercrimes, 11 violators were sentenced

On Wednesday a Chinese court sentenced 11 cybercriminals who participated in writing and distributing Trojan horse viruses meant to steal online game account passwords, as reported by the local media sources.

Xinhua media agency says that the crooks who stole login information for more than 5 million game accounts, were given prison sentences of up to three years and were fined a total of 830,000 Chinese yuan (US$120,000). Dozens of other members of the ring, which is suspected of 30 million yuan ($4.4 million) in crime, are expected to be sentenced soon.

On Monday the cyber space was struck with the reports that 32 million user accounts at the popular social networking site RockYou had been hacked. The situation is worsened by the fact that RockYou are storing all user account data in plain text in their database, exposing all that information to attackers. RockYou have yet to inform users of the breach.

Data breaches in France were uncovered in 92% of cases

According to a recent study titled “The 2009 Annual Study: France Enterprise Encryption Trends” and commissioned by PGP Corporation, a global leader in enterprise data protection, 67% of French organizations have been hit by at least one data breach incident within the last year, with 18% having been hit by more than five incidents. The study says that almost all the cases (92%) of the data breaches were not disclosed as there was no legal or regulatory requirement to do so.

A phishing attack hit Facebook users on Wednesday as reported by the PCWorld. Using phoney e-mail messages, appearing to come from Facebook, cybercrooks were trying to lure upright subscribers into giving away their personal sensitive information.

The messages with the Subject line “Hello” pretended to come from a friend according to TechCrunch, which first reported the attack.
