Bing enables natural language "under $100" search queries

A new feature was added by Bing to allow people to use natural language search queries for shopping. Now users can type words like "under $100" or "under $50" along with their keywords to get relevant results for products that match such descriptions. "With help from Microsoft Research, we've improved how we handle price queries to deliver results that automatically reflect your budget," the Bing Shopping team writes in a blog post. "This is especially handy when you're on the go, and don’t have time to browse around and click the right refinements.

Baidu faces an investigation and $120 million fine for search results bias

Baidu, the largest search engine in China, may soon face an anti-trust investigation over allegations that it blocked and degraded search query results for a Chinese online encyclopedia website. The complaint was filed by a company that owns the Wikipedia-like site Hudong.com with China's State Administration for Industry and Commerce (SAIC). The complaint requests SAIC to begin an anti-monopoly investigation against Baidu and to fine the search giant 790 million yuan (US$120 million).

While you may think that typo is just a mistake that makes you erase the entered word in the search engine query bar and lose several seconds, such typos may bring millions of dollars to search engines, Google in particular.

Benjamin Edelman and Tyler Moore have estimated that they make the search giant $497 million per year.

Edelman and Moore have published a conjoint work titled "Measuring Typosquatting Perpetrators and Funders." They note: "According to our analysis, 57% of typo sites include Google pay-per-click ads."

Google provided interesting statistics on searching trends during the year of 2009. Earlier the company reported the most searched for terms of the year. It showed the top ten fastest rising and fastest falling terms on both a global scale, and in the U.S. Globally, "Michael Jackson" was the fastest rising, while "Beijing 2008" was the fastest falling.

Alex Wilhelm at The Next Web reported an unusual behavior of the Google search machine that involves queries on religion. When you type any of the biggest world religions in the search bar Google suggests you different options of the search with one significant exception: it suggests nothing on Islam. If you type "christianity is", or "judaism is" you will get suggestions but when you type "islam is", you get nothing.

Google changes its main search page interface

 According to the posting on the website of The Register magazine Google is now testing a new appearance of its search page which will feature cleaner, bolder graphics and a default side bar. However it is not certain if the company will after all launch this new interface.

As it is shown on the screenshots the revised Google logo ditches its 3D shading and shadows while the search buttons switch to white text against a bright blue gradient background.
