Microsoft says taxation of its profits may hurt its financial statement

On Thursday Microsoft Corp stated that a review of its US tax obligations in past years by a government would negatively impact its financial statements in case it is not resolved in its favor.

Among other things the Internal Revenue Service was looking at Microsoft's use of transfer pricing, or methods of booking prices and sales between subsidiaries which allows big companies to avail of opportunities to report earnings in lower-tax jurisdictions.

Netflix undermines DVD sales by 20% in first quarter 2011

According to a new report DVD sales have declined by 20% in the first quarter of 2011 compared to the same period a year ago.

While the studios explain the trend as a problem of release cycles, it should be noted that Netflix subscriptions rose by 33%. People are increasingly giving their preference to unlimited content.

However, not all is so dull. The start of the second quarter of 2011 showed a 20% in sales.

Microsoft Bing to compete with Groupon and offer online deals

Search engine Bing has launched a new service called “Bing deals” to allow consumers to find the best local deals. The service is available for both desktop and mobile users.

The project is powered by The Dealmap, a service provider that allows people to find and share the best local deals.

The new feature will provide access to 200,000 offers in 14,000 cities.

Bing deals compiles leading offers from Groupon, LivingSocial and Restaurant.com, Bing's director of product management said in a company blog post.

Social network games will see a 28% market increase to over $1 billion

New stats from a research group eMarketer showed that the social gaming market will likely exceed $1 billion this year generally due to a rising number of users and a projected increase in advertising. It is a 28% growth over the previous year when the market accounted for $856 million.

eMarketer says that about 62 million US users which is 27% of the total Internet subscribers are forecast to play at least one of the social games a month in 2011, up from 53 million last year.

Shares of Best Buy Co declined over 15% on Tuesday as the largest online retailer reported an unexpected decrease in fiscal third-quarter profit and cut its outlook. The No. 1 U.S. electronics retailer’s (BBY 35.52, -6.18, -14.82%) profit dropped as lower demand for televisions, notebook computers and videogames led to a sales shortfall in the U.S. While margin widened slightly, analysts said they were concerned that it came at the expense of sales.
