Consumers make more payments than purchases on their credit cards

According to a new TransUnion analysis consumers made about $72 billion more in payments on their credit cards than on purchases within the period of first quarters of 2009 and 2010.

TD Ameritrade may acquire E*Trade online brokerage

TD Ameritrade Holding plans to discuss the possibility to purchase its rival online brokerage company E*Trade Financial Corp, according to the Wall Street Journal, who cited sources with the knowledge of the matter.

The Journal notes that the probable talks would not necessarily involve the offer from TD Ameritrade for E*Trade.

E*Trade Financial's largest shareholder, Citadel LLC, last week pressed the online brokerage to consider a sale of its business.

U.S. antitrust regulators are taking a closer look at Google Inc.'s proposed $750 million purchase of mobile phone marketer AdMob, the latest sign of greater government vigilance as Google tries to expand its advertising empire.
This so-called "second request" doesn't mean regulators intend to block Google's AdMob deal. Most other acquisitions that go through this stage end up getting approved.

 Many analysts expected the significant changes in the consumers’ behavior caused the financial crisis and decrease of spending power last year. They drew the gloomy perspectives of the Americans who make long-time stocks and never use a credit card. But they forgot a state of shock of consumers caused falling home values, dwindling retirement savings and threatened jobs, avoided them to by elementary goods at the supermarket. They tried to cobble together a dinner from leftovers in the cupboards only for not to buy anything else. But that was only temporary mood.

FTC accuses 'credit card' companies of defrauding consumers

 The Federal Trade Commission has filed an appeal in federal court concerning the credit card operations deceptive marketing. The complaint alleged that a catalog credit card operation deceptively marketed its card, failed to honor its refund policy, and charged up-front fees for a guaranteed line of credit. The accused, who charged consumers hundreds of dollars in fees for the card, voluntarily agreed to an order that prohibits the practices asserted in the complaint pending trial.

 As The Wall Street Journal reported, Goldman Sachs Group Inc is in negotiations to purchase millions of dollars of tax credits from Fannie Mae. But the deal could be blocked by the U.S. Treasury. Goldman hopes to get approbation in the nearest days but the administration is cautious about approving a deal. The main apprehensions are caused by the fact that the deal would help the bank reduce its tax bill.

Barclays purchases Standard Life Bank for $369 million

 Barclays Plc bought the bank arm of British insurer Standard Life Plc for 226 million pounds ($369 million) on Monday to build up its UK mortgage and savings business. Britain's second-biggest bank said Standard Life Bank would bring with it 78,000 mortgages and 8.8 billion pounds of outstanding balances, and a savings book of about 5.5 billion pounds in 287,000 accounts. The deal will add about 10 percent to Barclays' mortgage loan book, which stood at 84.4 billion pounds at the end of June, and 6 percent to its deposit balance of 88.5 billion.
