Microsoft disclaimed comments made by Intel software chief Renée James at Intel's Investor Meeting 2011 at the company's Santa Clara, California, headquarters this week. The Redmond firm said that James’ comments on the next version of Windows were "factually inaccurate and unfortunately misleading."

The future of microprocessors: nanolasers

Researchers at the University of California, Berkley, have developed a way to "grow" nanolasers on a piece of silicon which is believes to pave the way for new generation of laser processors.

In fact the silicon is bad at generating light. Scientists had previously tried to develop chips made of silicon and so-called "III-V" (three-five) semiconductor materials, but this approach has problems of its own.

Microsoft unveiled at last its new version of a popular web browser saying that it would work at faster speeds, deliver better graphics and be less obtrusive to users. Internet Explorer 9, unlike previous versions and many competing browsers, pushes itself into the background.

"People go to the Web for site, not the browser," said Dean Hachamovitch, general manager for IE, at a press event in San Francisco. "Today Web sites are boxed in, the box is the browser."

Asus has announced its first netbook on dual-core Atom N550 processor. The Eee PC 1015PEM features Asus' curvy seashell design with said 1.5GHz CPU, 1GB of DDR 3, 160-320GB of hard drive storage, 802.11n Wi-Fi and other usual accessories.

The new netbook sports a pair of USB 3.0 ports and Bluetooth 3.0 for the next generation peripherals that are not yet accessible for a common public.

Intel purchases McAfee anti-virus vendor

Intel has purchased the information security company McAfee for $7.68bn. The chip maker has offered $48 a share in cash for the anti-virus firm, a 62 per cent premium of McAfee's Wednesday closing price of $29.93 a share.

Boards of directors of both companies have approved the deal, which is still subject to McAfee shareholder approval and regulatory approval.

Intel said the deal signalled its decision to put security on par with energy-efficient performance and internet connectivity as a strategic focus area.

At the weekends Dell unveiled its new Inspiron R laptops for US customers which had been first launched several months ago in other parts of the world including Australia and India.

The new R models are designed to perform multiple functions which range from replacing desktop PCs, to serving up multimedia home entertainment, to acting as take-along workstations on visits to Starbuck's. However, functionality is not the only advantage featuring the new series, the laptops have a nice appearance with the covers coming in four different brushed metal finishes with chrome accents.

Intel will present six new notebook processors

As it has recently become known, this fall Intel targets to attack the mobile market with no less than six new notebook processors. 

One of the processors, Core i5 580M (2.66GHz stock, 3.33GHz Turbo), has previously been unveiled.  The two other dual-core will come along with this one: Core i5 560M (2.66GHz stock, 3.2GHz Turbo) and Core i7 640M (turbos to 3.46GHz).

So, Google may develop its own chips after all?

Dan Olds from Gabriel Consulting was speculating on The Register magazine on the possibility that Google may develop its own server chips. He supposes that taking into account Google’s scale and internal needs it is quite plausible that the company can do its own customized ARM implementation.

New MacBooks are coming soon?

MacBook Pros are due to be updated with new Intel silicon, that represent new mobile Core i5 and/or Core i7 processors.

A lot of PC producers, like Hewlett-Packard, Toshiba, Dell, and Sony have already shifted to the Intel chips, first introduced in January.

Currently, the speculation seems more legal because blogs are citing new MacBook part numbers that Macrumors says it has independently confirmed as real. Others also seem to be taking the new data seriously.

Microsoft ends support of one Intel architecture in its Server distribution

Last week Microsoft reported in its blog posting that the company is ending the support of Intel's Itanium processor with the current version of its Windows Server OS.

"Windows Server 2008 R2 will be the last version of Windows Server to support the Intel Itanium architecture," Dan Reger , a Microsoft senior technical product manager, wrote on the Windows Server Division Weblog. "SQL Server 2008 R2 and Visual Studio 2010 are also the last versions to support Itanium."

Apple fans will likely put aside purchasing new laptops to buy instead the widely rumored iPad tablets according to the research from US stats gatherer ChangeWave. ChangeWave polled 3314 consumers to figure out their recent and anticipated buying habits.

The survey found that 18% of the polled are very or somewhat likely to buy the Apple tablet. ¾ of the respondents acknowledged they would pay $500 or more for an iPad with only 37% expressing their willingness to spend more than $700. Some pundits have said they expect Apple to charge $999 for it.

New thinner PlayStation 3 was at least announced by Sony

Sony has finally provided details on its new slim version of the Playstation 3 and price cuts on existing models. According to the company statement the PS3 will be available at stores in North America, Europe and Asia starting September 1 for a price of $300.

The company also reported that it cuts the prices for current 80GB and 160GB models to $300 and $400 respectively, beginning August 18.

Apple refreshes its Mac line

Despite gloomy forecasts for the Apple’s iMac computers the company refreshed the line and added more capabilities while keeping the prices almost unchanged. On Tuesday Apple announced two new models of iMac, Mac mini and Mac Pro desktops.

A new flagship 24-inch iMac is twice the memory size and twice the storage of the previous generation 20-inch iMac but it is still priced at the same $1,499.
