MasterCard makes all cards PayPass enabled

MasterCard makes all its cards issued in Australia and New Zealand PayPass enabled starting next year. At present there are already 5.3 million PayPass cards in Australia that can be used at over 35,000 retail locations, including McDonald's, Bunnings and 7Eleven.

A new technology to access rooms is being tried by InterContinental Hotels Group. Instead of conventional keys or plastic cards used by guests the two locations the Holiday Inn Chicago O'Hare Rosemont and the Holiday Inn Express Houston Downtown Convention Center will offer smartphone enabled access.

Australia is still a cash based society

Despite the growing trends to use plastic credit and debit cards, Australia remains to be a cash-based society. The dominant position of cash has been found by Reserve Bank of Australia in the study of consumer payment behavior which reports the use of cash for 70% of all transactions. The use of cash to make the low value payments under $10 and 75% of payments for goods worth between $11 and $25 give such a dominant position to cash.

Barclaycard gold cardholders are to get new contactless functionality

As it became known on Tuesday, Barclaycard is raising the number of its cardholders with the contactless functionality on their plastic cards. Thus, new contactless payment technology within the card will let Barclaycard Gold and Classic cardholders make payments of up to £10 by swiping their card against a reader, like the system used for Oyster travelcards on the London Underground.

Orange and Barclaycard announced the launch of a new mobile payment system that will produce, as the companies claim, the "biggest revolution in payments since plastic cards were introduced over 40 years ago". With the new system customers will be enabled to make their payments for goods and services at merchants by waving their handset against a reader.

Resources state that banks are going to be more careful on issuing plastic cards next year, due to rising unpaid credit card bills.

CCAP data showed that the number of cards in circulation has risen to about 6.5 million in September from 5.5 million in December 2007.

Discover Financial Services introduced its biodegradable Discover® Card option which today is the only financial product of the kind existing in the USA.
