Gemalto’s credit cards ensure more secure online payments

Gemalto has launched a new credit card technology that enables banks to offer their clients a single card with both payment and increased security for online transactions.

Users activate the card’s online secure password by pressing a special button on the surface of the card. The card generates digital code that can be used for one-time authorization. Thus, customers enters this unique and non-reusable numeric code on a Web page apart from their user name and password.

The new Gemalto Ezio product is immediately available in the United States.

Visa launches a card with a keypad in Europe: more secure online payments?

For customers in Europe MasterCard launched a new payment card which is equipped with a keypad and eight-character display for showing a one-time passcode in a move to provide additional protection against fraud when performing online transactions.

Among other things Visa’s new product CodeSure can be used as a chip-and-PIN (personal identification number) card, where people enter into a terminal a four-digit pin that is confirmed by a microchip.

A global provider of financial services technology solutions Fiserv Inc reported the extension of its partnership with SunTrust Banks, Inc. which decided to select Fiserv’s Mobile MoneyTM.

Sun Trust will thus be able to provide its clients with access to mobile financial services. SunTrust will use Mobile Money to enable clients to access their accounts using SMS (text messaging) or mobile browser technology, complementing a separate downloadable application that is already available. MShift, a US mobile banking provider, is suing Intuit subsidiary Digital Insight Corporation and users of its mobile banking technology platform. The lawsuit was filed with the United States District Court in the Northern District of California. Community Trust Financial Corporation and Community Trust Bank are named as co-defendants.

The filing alleges that the mobile banking technology Digital Insight is providing its customers, such as Community Trust Bank, infringes on a 2005 MShift patent.

According to the conclusion made by Cambridge University security researchers credit card security systems for online transactions such as Verified by Visa are in fact inefficient and burdensome.

While the 3D Secure system branded as either Verified by Visa or MasterCard SecureCode is widely implemented today to secure many online transactions, with over 200 million cardholders registered Cambridge researchers Professor Ross Anderson and Steven Murdoch note that it badly engineered in comparison with alternative schemes such as OpenID and InfoCard.
