Google launches free online music service

Google is about to announce a new online music service at its annual Google I/O developers conference in San Francisco, according to the Wall Street Journal report.

The Journal cited the sources familiar with the situation saying the service will operate in a testing mode initially and not be available to the public at large.

The Journal said Google has not sought licenses from the four major recorded-music companies and the new feature is likely to include a system that functions much like a remote hard drive.

Amazon launches a new media service to store and play music online

Amazon has unveiled a new online service to allow users to securely store and access their music via smartphones or PCs.

The move is a part of a broader trend seen today in the technology sector where all companies try to deliver better entertainment features online.

With Amazon Cloud Service users can securely store music on the company’s servers instead of local hard drives.

Amazon said early on Tuesday the new service would allow customers to play music on any Android, Windows and Apple devices.

Imeem was purchased by MySpace for ‘a penny’

 Song streaming site imeem was at last purchased by MySpace on Tuesday for less than $1 million. According to MySpace Chief Executive Owen Van Natta in a blog posting the deal will enable MySpace Music venture to integrate imeem's offerings over time.

The acquisition comes as MySpace has launched its own online music service that lacks a mobile phone application that streams songs on Apple's iPhones and devices using Google's Android operating system, such as the new Droid phone.

Interpret, a market research firm focused on entertainment, media and technology, has released a study that polled 64 million people of which 24 million respondents (36%) admitted that they had downloaded music illegally in the past three months. These online surfers confessed they were downloading music illegally through file-sharing networks and BitTorrent, but that doesn’t mean they don’t buy any music.

$1.92 million fine charged on a woman for illegal online music trading

On Thursday, a jury ordered a woman, who won a retrial after a US$220,000 verdict against her for sharing music files, to pay $1.92 million ($80,000 for each of the 24 songs). She is accused of illegally trading over the Kazaa Internet service.

In 2007, when she lost the original suit, Jammie Thomas-Rasset, , was one of the first people to receive a guilty verdict in a case backed by the Recording Industry Association of America.

Will YouTube be more successful partnering with Universal Music Group?

YouTube and Universal Music Group have announced they would be partnering with the aim of launching an online music video venture, reports the Associated Press.

The venture is expected to launch later this year with Universal's entire catalog of almost 10,000 music videos. It is also projected that the companies will share ad revenue on the Vevo.com site, on a Vevo channel on YouTube and on a tailor-made video player that can be placed on social-networking pages and other sites.

A report published by comScore shows that 45.7 million of Internet users in Japan visited entertainment websites in February 2009 while the total number of online subscribers as of December accounts fro 60 million. The research revealed that Japanese web surfers spent about 15% of their online time to skim through entertainments sites including TV, music and online video websites.

According to the Reuters report, Apple Inc and major music brands are betting that the implementation of three-tier pricing at the iTunes Music Store will boost music sales with a new mix of song-based packages and give consumers more options.

Apple will introduce its new three-tier price points at 69 cents, 99 cents and $1.29 on Tuesday. It’s well known that since opening in 2003 all songs in the iTunes store have been priced at 99 cents.
