Who is the leader in display ads? Facebook

A new report from comScore unveiled that Facebook was leading the display ads market in the US in the first quarter having outstripped Yahoo.

The report shows that Facebook delivered 176 billion display ad impressions, representing 16.2 percent market share. Yahoo sites ranked second with 132 billion impressions (12.1%), followed by Microsoft sites with 60 billion impressions (5.5%) and Fox Interactive Media with 53 billion impressions (4.9%).

Craigslist is a disorderly house for prostitutes

According to the estimates by the analysts from the Advanced Interactive Media Group the revenue of the popular classifieds service Craigslist is expected to increase by 22% this year boosted mainly by the Advanced Interactive Media Group fee-based postings in its adult services section. The report says that nearly 1/3 of the $122 million expected to be earned by Craigslist in 2010 will come from the adult ads, which often promote the services of prostitutes.

Yahoo closes its Publisher Network for inefficiency

Yahoo beta advertising service that allowed small online publishers, such as individual bloggers, to sign up to carry ads sold and distributed by the company in exchange for a commission, will be terminated, the company announced this week.

Known as Yahoo Publisher Network Beta the service has been providing pay-per-click text ads that are contextually relevant to the Web pages of participating publishers in which they appear. It was launched back in 2005 and since that time it has remained with no upgrades from its initial stage.

Targeted advertising brings 670% more clicks and more money

A survey commissioned by US advertising network trade body the Network Advertising Initiative (NAI) showed that behavioral advertising is more efficient than non-targeted internet advertising while it is also more expensive. The study was performed by former US consumer protection official Howard Beales.

The survey revealed that targeting ads cost advertisers 2.68 times what normal 'run of network' ads do. Run of network (RON) ads are those placed across the entire inventory of websites that an ad network is contracted to provide ads for.

First website to support pay-per-call advertising was launched

The first knowledge-site dedicated to supporting the pay-per-call advertising industry PayPerCall.org was launched on December 28, 2009.

The website has a ‘free downloads’ section with free tools that Pay Per Call publishers can install on their sites to help educate advertisers on the benefits of performance-based advertising that drives phone calls instead of clicks. PayPerCall.org also features an industry directory. Listings are free.

Mail.Ru confirms Google will replace Yandex as its default search engine

Today morning December 15, the popular Russian internet resource with more than 50 million unique monthly users Mail.Ru confirmed that it is replacing Yandex with Google as its default search provider starting January 2010.

Mail.Ru reported that Mountain View will indeed refrain from branding the search engine with the Google name and logo like it usually does.

According to the statistics Mail.Ru service shares about 10% of the Russian search market falling behind Google who has a 13% market share. Yet Yandex owns no less than 58% of the market.

Users can now decide themselves on behavioral ads on Yahoo

 On Monday the Internet services provider Yahoo launched anew tool to allow online users to opt out of targeted advertisements. The move comes as a response to multiple demands from customers as well pressure from the US lawmakers and privacy groups advocating more users’ control over behavioral advertising.

While making allowance for the concerns on the part of the FTC and the U.S. Congress, Yaho still notes that the main reason that pushed the Internet searching company to introduce the tool was users’ demand.

 In a move to restore its reputation and profits as well as to regain its growth and investors confidence Yahoo made a statement during a presentation to analysts on Wednesday promising to increase its operating profit margin three times within the following three years.

Yahoo said that the company has fixed a number of shortcomings that were featuring its services in the past. The company executives pointed to a large online audience and ties to advertisers as main factors that will drive Yahoo back to its high rankings.

Internet ads sales drop by 5% for second consecutive quarter

 Internet advertising in the United States slipped 5 percent in the second quarter as the recession extended the first slump in online marketing since 2002.

The $5.4 billion spent on Internet ads during the three months ending in June compared with $5.7 billion at the same time last year, according to data released Monday by the Interactive Advertising Bureau and PricewaterhouseCoopers.
