Gartner puts mobile banking first on its list of top mobile apps

Gartner, a market research firm, conducted a survey showed money transfers and payments over mobile phones will be among the top 10 most important mobile applications by 2012. Mobile money transfers pass ahead location-based services, search and browsing, taking the first line in the list. Sandy Shen, research director in Gartner's Mobile Devices and Consumer Services group forecasts that money transfers will attract more users becoming more popular both in developed and developing countries.

SNCF and Gemalto enable ticketing on contactless mobile phones

SNCF, a provider of efficient and innovative solutions for travelers, and Gemalto, a world leader in digital security, introduced a new service which allows travelers to purchase and recharge their transport tickets through a contactless mobile phone with NFC (Near Field Communication) technology. This new service is the result of a project run jointly by the SNCF Proximités Innovation and Technologies Pole, the SNCF subsidiary RITMx, an expert in ticketing distribution solutions, and Gemalto.

Dutch bank ING has partnered MasterCard to launch m-payment service

Dutch bank ING has announced the launch of the new project in Romania developed in cooperation with MasterCard. According to the recent release the partners decided to pilot the NFC based m-payment system to provide the Romanians with an opportunity to use their mobile phones to make all kids of payments.

Although there have been promising trials in the UK, concerns over privacy and security may delay the rapid take-up of m-payments. Despite consumers' fears, markets are preparing, if slowly, for widespread m-payment systems.
