ANZ trials MasterCard PayPass NFC payments in New Zealand

ANZ started a limited pilot test of mobile payments via NFC stickers and BlackBerry based micro-SD cards in New Zealand.

The bank is issuing MasterCard PayPass stickers and memory cards to staff to test the technology in retail locations. Earlier ANZ launched its first PayPass-enabled credit cards to consumers.

There are just several terminals that accept contactless payments in New Zealand including Westpac Stadium and Eden Park as well as Hell Pizza, St Pierre's Sushi and Corporate Cabs set to come onstream in July.

Forex news: the yen is high against European and other currencies

In Tuesday Asian deals the Japanese yen climbed up to a 4-day high against the currencies of Europe, Australia and New Zealand as a fall in most Asian stocks boosted demand for the safe-haven Japanese currency. Besides, the yen also regained slightly from a 4-day low against the U.S. dollar.

The yen that fell to a 4-day low of 82.37 against the U.S. dollar in early Tuesday Asian deals at 7:55 pm ET recovered thereafter. As of now, the yen is trading near yesterday's close of 82.11 per dollar. If the yen gains further, it may likely target a fresh 15-year high of 81.4.

New Zealand consumers can now enjoy Ukash use

Friday, Ukash announced the availability of its e-cash vouchers at 200 point of sale terminals, operated by epay, across New Zealand.

The launch followed the successful implementation in Australia last year. Ukash has signed a deal with epay to let New Zealand customers get Ukash vouchers for the first time, which will be available from convenience stores across the North and South islands.

According to Straits Times newspaper, Singaporean authorities are considering a law that would cut off the Internet access for any person who receives three warnings to stop downloading pirated content. Although the report didn't offer details of how such a law might work in Singapore or the proposed procedure for cutting off a user's Internet access, it said concerns had been raised that cutting off a user's Internet access from one provider would not necessarily prevent them from connecting using other means, such as a family member's Internet connection.

Low consumer spending in NZ with increasing credit card billings

Central bank of New Zealand has reported that Credit card billings in the country in January rose as consumer spending has remained low.

The increase made a seasonally adjusted 1.7 percent against a 2.2 percent fall in December. The increase became the first upward shift in four months. Moreover, the gain has been reported to be the strongest monthly gain since May 2006.

Earlier this month it was revealed that the retail sales of electronic cards showed no growth in January, comparing to the 0.6 percent decrease in the previous month.

The stir around ubiquitous slowdown make consumers tighten their belts and spend less but their decision to save more is unlikely to produce good fruits as long as saving puts the economy to sleep. New Zealand reported lowered card retail spending for the third month in row in January. According to the latest reports the card spending in New Zealand continues to decline being in the worst slump. The trend is ascribed to the customers’ cutting their spending in light of increasing layoffs and deteriorating economy. December was a third month already credit card usage was declining, the most protracted fall since the series commenced in 1994, Reserve Bank released in a report on its Web-site. Credit card spending dropped 2.2 % from November, when it lowered 1%.

Coremetrics data cited by Inside Retailing showed interesting results. It was observed that online shoppers in Australia and New Zealand have slowed spending. Moreover, thet prefer shopping online at local sites. And it is not the only observation. In fact the company found online sales conversions in Australia and New Zealand dropped to 2.9 and 2.5 orders per 100 online sessions, respectively, in Q4 2008, down from 4.4 and 4 between April and June 2008.

Customers in New Zealand are reported to decrease their electronic card transactions. In November the value of electronic card transactions dropped at a rate largest for the past six years. Statistics New Zealand (SNZ) reports that the seasonally adjusted value of the total electronic card transaction (ECT) series in November 2008 decreased 2.8% against October 2008.
