Starbucks expands its Card Mobile payment service to New York stores

Starbucks reported a successful implementation of its new Starbucks Card Mobile payment pilot trial with a positive feedback from the customers in select San Francisco, Seattle and Target stores. This prompted the company to further expand the trial to about 300 company-operated stores in New York City and Long Island.

Using Starbucks Card Mobile owners of iPhone and BlackBerry smartphones can pay for their coffee by holding up the 2-D barcode on their smartphone to the scanner at the counter. The application allows customers to manage and reload their Starbucks Cards as well.

Nokia shuts down its stores

Wednesday, Nokia assured it will close its two flagship North American retail stores, in New York and Chicago, on the heels of a similar plans to close its store in London.

 Nokia didn't still unveil when the US stores to be closed, but the store on London's Regent Street reportedly will be closed in the first quarter next year.

 Since the majority of consumer purchases in North America are made through wireless operators, Nokia will focus on working with those operators and with retailers like Amazon.com and Best Buy.

 Citigroup unveiled its intention to focus its marketing efforts on six cities, New York, Washington, Miami, Chicago, San Francisco, and Los Angeles, according to Thursday’s Wall Street Journal report.

$80 million ATM Ponzi scheme orchestrators were charged with fraud

Two men are charged in New York with an $80 million Ponzi scheme involving an automated teller machine business, federal authorities said Monday. 

Vance Moore II, 55, was arrested Friday and was scheduled for an initial court appearance Monday in North Carolina, where he resides. His New York attorney, Stuart London, did not immediately return a call for comment.

Letitia James, a councilwoman of New York, wants a city subway station to be named after Michael Jackson so as to honor the great singer. It is the station where the star made the music video for "Bad."

She wants a plaque placed at Brooklyn's Hoyt-Schermerhorn station - or to have "Jackson" added to the station's name. However, Metropolitan Transportation Authority spokesman Kevin Ortiz said Monday it's unlikely. But the statement didn’t discourage James who plans a petition drive.

According to a new survey of 73 cities around the world conducted by the Swiss bank UBS, French people are working least, while Cairo and Seoul citizens spend most hours at work. 

Thus, in Lyon people spend at work about 1,582 hours per year and in Paris - 1,594, compared to an average amount of 1,902 in the surveyed cities. At the same time, in Cairo people worked 2,373 hours, while in Seoul they worked 2,312 hours.

AmEx plans to cancel rewards points on credit cards

As it became known Thursday, American Express Co., the biggest U.S. credit-card issuer by purchases, intends to cancel rewards points earned on some credit cards during any month that a late charge is assessed and offer to add them back for a fee. AmEx also said it’s raising rates for cash advances and increasing the late fee.

Speaking on the sidelines at the Association of the Bar of the City of New York, Robert Khuzami, the director of the SEC`s enforcement division, said that it plans to issue more subpoenas and give people more incentives to cooperate with investigations as it works to tighten oversight of financial markets. The changes will help the regulator as it focuses "on cases involving the greatest and most immediate harm and on cases that send an out-sized message of deterrence," he added.

Seven months ago Citibank officials noticed suspicious ATM transactions coming through the five cash machines in the vestibule of a Citibank's 65th Street Branch in New York's Upper East Side. When the bank official responsible for the spot got a call alerting him to a theft in progress, he crossed the street to peer through the vestibule glass, and watched as a man in a baseball cap, jeans and a sports coat put a thick envelope into a briefcase and moved from one ATM to the next. The thief was seized and now he pleads guilty to a count of ATM fraud.
