Steve Jobs ordered by a court to answer questions of class-action lawyers

US Magistrate Judge Howard Lloyd, based in San Jose, California, ruled on Monday that Apple Inc CEO Steve Jobs, though being on medical leave, will have to answer questions from lawyers for a group of consumers accusing the company of creating a music-download monopoly. The ruling says that the plaintiffs’ lawyers can question Jobs for a total of two hours.

No more music downloads for Nokia phones

Nokia is terminating the Ovi Music Unlimited service in 27 of the 33 countries where it was offered as stated by the phone maker.

The subscription service that was previously known as Comes with Music has been offered with some Nokia phones for some time. Users were able to download an unlimited amount of music to their PC or over the air to the phone. After the subscription is over users can continue to listen the tracks they have downloaded.

Customers of Cricket Communications to access unlimited music downloads

Cricket Communications, a subsidiary of low-cost carrier Leap Wireless International Inc, announced the introduction of a new service for wireless customers to allow them to unlimited song downloads as part of a monthly rate plan.

Starting January customers will be able to use a combined voice, data and text plan, along with all-you-can-download music for $55 a month.

The company said the new Muve service will offer music from the four major record labels: Vivendi's Universal Music Group; Warner Music Group; Sony Music Entertainment and EMI Music.

Users expecting that they will ever be able to download from iTunes their favorite songs by Beatles should wait for an indefinite time because in a short term that doesn’t seem to happen. The Fab Four have long resisted the idea of digital downloads, instead selling millions of old-fashioned compact discs last year after remastering the catalog.

Apple Corps, the group's holding company has been unable to agree on terms with EMI Group, which licenses the Beatles' recordings. And then there's the unrelated Apple Inc, owner of iTunes, the world's largest music retailer.

Chinese court clears Baidu of piracy. Naturally, it’s a Chinese pirate after all

As expected Chinese court supported their local company Baidu in a copyright infringement case launched against the largest search engine in the Celestial Empire by Universal Music, Sony BMG Music Entertainment Hong Kong and Warner Music Hong Kong in early 2008.

The Beijing No. 1 Intermediate People's Court cleared Baidu of piracy ruling that the search engine had not broken rules by linking to music downloads that infringe copyright.

The IFPI said it was very disappointed with the ruling. Another site called Sohu was also cleared, the IFPI said.

Interpret, a market research firm focused on entertainment, media and technology, has released a study that polled 64 million people of which 24 million respondents (36%) admitted that they had downloaded music illegally in the past three months. These online surfers confessed they were downloading music illegally through file-sharing networks and BitTorrent, but that doesn’t mean they don’t buy any music.

“iTunes killer”  Spotify  launches its iPhone service

Spotify, the Swedish music streaming service that has been known as “iTunes killer” because of its ease of use and its comprehensive, free library of millions of songs, unveiled its plans to implement its first mobile application.

Spotify has already submitted the application to Apple's iTunes App Store for the approval. If approved, the service will be available for users to download onto iPhones. Customers will also be enabled to stream playlists.

France is likely to obtain a law protecting the privacy right on the Internet. It became known that the French Senate has finally adopted the Internet piracy bill, which was previously rejected as unconstitutional one. 

It should be told that the law was previously adopted in May however blocked in a month by the court. Previously it was proposed to disconnect the users caught downloading music and video illegally.

According to The New York Times report, Universal Music Group and Virgin Media agreed on a U.K. plan to make Universal’s entire DRM-free catalog available for a monthly subscription price. 

Virgin is to take a more active role in identifying unauthorized downloading of the label’s music. Virgin said that a range of measures will, "include, as a last resort for persistent offenders, a temporary suspension of internet access.

France adopting law to cut music pirates off the Internet, wrong legislation?

On Tuesday the National Assembly of France passed the law to prohibit illegal music and video downloads through the internet and punish those who were three times found sharing the files in breach of the copyrights. The bill institutes the first government agency that will be responsible for tracking and punishing online pirates. The organization under this legislation will be known as HADOPI, the High Authority for Copyright Protection and Dissemination of Works on the Internet.
