MoneyGram allows remittances from US to Visa cards in Mexico

MoneyGram International has partnered with Visa to launch MoneyGram's first cash-to-Visa account program for remittances from the United States to Mexico.

Under the program consumers will be able to use any of the 35,000 MoneyGram locations in the U.S. to quickly and reliably send funds directly to eligible Visa accounts in Mexico. Recipients in Mexico receive the funds directly to their Visa credit, debit, or prepaid accounts. Then they can withdraw the cash from Visa's global network of millions of merchant acceptance locations and ATMs.

As it became known, Wells Fargo has expanded its ExpressSend remittance network in Mexico through an agreement with Houston-based Transnetwork Corporation. Thus far the company is adding over 4,000 payout locations in Mexico for a total of more than 9,000 locations. These additional outlets have significantly widened Wells Fargo's remittance payout network in Mexico.

According to the research from Javelin Strategy & Research, that collected data from 3294 Americans online and 4874 by phone, banks need to consolidate their ATMs security as about 10% of US fraud victims have their details used to make withdrawals at ATMs.

About 25% of these victims have already abandoned their financial institution, as the research found.

Mexican stocks up as U.S. economy shows improvement

Mexican stocks edged higher Thursday, poised to finish at a fresh high for the year, after U.S. data showing that the world's largest economy and Mexico's largest trading partner remains on track toward economic recovery.
Mexico's IPC rose 0.1% to 32,492 in Christmas Eve's abbreviated trading session. A finish higher would mark the third straight session of advances.
Home builders, industrial services providers and consumer discretionary stocks were among the best price performers.

Western Union was supported by Supreme Court against Arizona State

This week Western Union was upheld by the Arizona Supreme Court in the lawsuit against the state. The court ruled that Arizona exceeded its authority in attempting to seize Western Union wire transfers sent from other states to locations in Mexico.

In September 2006, the Arizona Attorney General obtained a warrant seeking to seize all Western Union money transfers above $500 sent from anyone in 29 U.S. states for which payment was requested at any of 26 agent locations in Sonora, Mexico.

Scotiabank thinks of its business expansion in Mexico

According to the Reuters report, Scotiabank, Canada's third-largest lender intends to develop its business in Mexico through acquisition in insurance or fund management, as the chief executive of the bank's Mexican unit said on Wednesday. Scotiabank was the first of several foreign banks to move into Mexico after a financial crisis devastated the country's banks in the 1990s. Canadian banks have remained profitable as many U.S. and European institutions teeter on the brink of insolvency.

The Wall Street Journal citing the people familiar with the situation around Citigroup Inc reported on its website that the company is closing in on the deal with the U.S. government to increase it ownership in the bank to as much as 40%, confirming thus speculations that were spread before. The deal could be announced today, on Thursday.
