Does Facebook have exclusive rights for “book”?

As it became known, Facebook is now suing a professional community for teachers that operates a social networking site for teachers, Teachbook. The website for teachers is accused of unfair usage of the word “book” in its name that creates a strong competition for Facebook.  Sounds weird, doesn’t it?

JPMorgan Chase & Co has sued a former private banking executive arrested last year in Argentina on criminal charges, accusing him of stealing $2.8 million from a customer's account.


The second-largest U.S. bank filed its civil lawsuit on Monday against former vice president Hernan Arbizu, 17 months after his July 2008 arrest in Buenos Aires.

A probe was launched into China Mobile corruption

Vice chairman and executive director Zhang Chunjiang of China Mobile, one of three major state-owned network operators in China and the largest in the world by mobile subscribers, has been prosecuted by Chinese authorities for suspected "serious personal violations".

China Mobile will watch the situation and make further announcements when appropriate about Chunjiang , as it said in a filing with the Hong Kong stock exchange.

US District Judge rejects Countrywide's appeal

 

US District Judge Richard J. Howell in Manhattan, in a ruling Tuesday, sent the case, seeking class-action status, back to New York State Supreme Court, where it was originally filed in December. 

Howell, thus, declined a bid by Countrywide Financial Corp. to have a lawsuit over its plans to make billions of dollars in loan modifications heard in federal court.

As it became known Wednesday, American International Group was sued by two Californians, Robert and Harlene Horowitz, who alleged they lost $8.5 million in the Madoff scandal. They claim their homeowner insurance policies entitled them to coverage on losses from Bernard Madoff's Ponzi scheme. 

Thus, Horowitzes filed the federal lawsuit in Manhattan, seeking class-action status on behalf of Madoff investors who also had policies with the Fraud SafeGuard coverage.

On Thursday the US Department of Justice confirmed that it is investigating a settlement involving Google Book Search for possible violations of the Sherman Act, a US antitrust law, following months of speculation that the agency had its eye on the service.

The Authors Guild filed a lawsuit against Google, charging the search giant with copyright infringement for scanning books without always getting the approval of authors and publishers.

 MasterCard agreed to pay a fine with a 16% discount

The world's second-largest credit card provider MasterCard revealed it decision to agree with prepaying its obligations under a legal settlement with US vendors and will receive a 16% discount. Thus, the company announced on Thursday, it is to pay $335 million to settle obligations through 2012 totaling $400 million.

Subjected to court approval, the prepayment is to be carried out on September 30.
