ARM-based Windows 8 will bring more cheap laptops

iHS iSuppli predicts that Microsoft’s ARM-enabled Windows 8 operating system will bring a new series of low-cost laptops stealing possible a significant share from Intel.

At the moment ARM enabled laptops are almost nonexistent. However, the market analyst believes that in 4 years ARM based laptops will account for 22.9% of global laptop shipments from 3% forecast for next year.

The laptops will be priced well under $700 - many in the sub-$500 segment, according to CNET and iHS-iSuppli analyst Matthew Wilkins.

Google sued for calling its laptop “Chromebook”

Google is in the legal war with ISYS Technologies over the derivatives of the Chrome word. The Mountain View plans to call its forthcoming laptop Chromebooks while ISYS claims the name infringes on its trademarks.

ISYS asked a Utah district court for an injunction to stop Google and its partners from launching the laptops later this month. The company owns Xi3 Corporation, a subsidiary which last month introduced the ChromiumPC, a desktop computer that runs the Chrome OS.

This week at the Computex technology exhibition in Taipei Asus will show its first new PC in the "Ultrabook" class on Intel chips. Intel says it will include the best features of tablets and will go on sale by Christmas and cost under $1,000.

The Ultrabooks will be slim and lightweight but still pack high-performance processors. They should account for 40 percent of laptop sales to consumers by the end of next year, Tom Kilroy, a senior vice president at Intel, told Reuters in an interview.

The PCs with the focus on the web are manufactured by Samsung and Acer inc. The operating system developed by Google is essentially a web browser that encourages people to use applications like email and spreadsheets directly on the web, instead of storing software.

New documents in the PowerPoint format leaked the Internet and revealed some facts about a new super-slim Android 3.0 tablet to be announced by Lenovo soon. The tablet targets enterprise market and has a number of links and apps that will allow it to connect to existing enterprise directories, and management and security applications.

In a separate PDF file it was also revealed that Lenovo is preparing a new notebook series. According to the PDF, the notebooks' battery will run three times longer and charge 2.5 times faster compared to those in Lenovo's existing ThinkPad line.

Half of all laptops in 2011 will be based on graphic processors

According to the forecast made by market research firm HIS iSuppli, half of the notebooks and a growing number of PCs shipped in 2011 will feature graphics-enabled microprocessors as designers Intel and Advanced Micro Devices (AMD) increase competition for the units that raise multimedia speeds without additional hardware.

HIS says that the processors with built-in graphics capabilities will be installed this year on 115 million notebooks, half of total shipments, and 63 million desktop PCs, or 45 percent of the total.

According to the rumors coming from some moles Acer, Asus as well as Lenovo are preparing to launch MacBook Air clones as early as next year.

While the notebooks will be reportedly "ultra-thin" - 13.3in and 14in – a great number of ports along with removable batteries and hard drives rather than SSDs will make them hardly competitive with Apple’s Air.

The only specs info available is that the laptops will use Intel's 'Sandy Bridge' next-gen 32nm processors. The Air alternatives will be out by the end of Q1, the moles claimed.

New figures from Gartner reveal that PC shipments in Western Europe increased by 19.6% in the second quarter as compared with the same period a year ago. Gartner reports that 15.6 million units were sold for the quarter, with the consumer market outshining the professional segment.

The consumer market was led by sales of notebooks and all-in-one PCs. Mini-notebooks or netbook sales grew less than 10 percent for the first time but still comprised 19 percent of mobile PC sales in Europe.

Eurocom launches a 4TB laptop on Core i7 and Xeon 5600 chips

A laptop with a 4TB of storage and Intel's fastest six-core processor was announced by a Canadian PC maker Eurocom. The laptop dubbed Panther 2.0 was developed to be a replacement for workstation to run high-end graphics and CAD (computer-aided design) programs.

The 4TB of storage may exceed those offered with most desktops and even server computers. It is allocated in four slots, with a separate drive in each. Processor options include Intel's Core i7 Extreme Edition or Xeon 5600 chips, which have up to six processor cores and run at speeds of up to 3.33GHz.
