The United States remains the top spammer in 2010

The United States retained its top position in the "Dirty Dozen" list of spam relaying nations compiled by security firm Sophos.

"Traditional subject matter such as adverts for pharmaceuticals continue to be a concern, with some 36 million Americans reported to purchase drugs from unlicensed online sellers--but more and more messages are spreading malware and are attempting to phish user names, passwords and personal information," Sophos said in a statement.

Botnets thrive in 2010 with Rustock as the king of spam

In spite of many efforts applied to shut down infamous botnets that distribute tons of spam across the Internet they continue to thrive and live with Rustock still remaining the largest network in the industry, reports Symantec. This year Rustock sent over 44 billion spam e-mails per day and had more than one million bots under its control. Botnets Grum and Cutwail are the second and third largest respectively, the report said.

A spammer will pay $711 million in damages to Facebook

 On Thursday the social networking giant Facebook was granted by the court $711 million in damages in an anti-spam case against Internet marketer Sanford Wallace.

The social networking company sued Wallace for his illicit activity of accessing users’ profiles without their permission and sending fake posts and messages. Apart from the damages award the San Jose, Calif., court referred Wallace to the U.S. Attorney's office for prosecution for criminal contempt of court - meaning he could face imprisonment.

According to a report being released on Wednesday by security company McAfee Inc. 62 trillion junk e-mails in 2008 wasted enough electricity to power 2.4 million U.S. homes for a year, reports the Associated Press. Thus the estimate of "Carbon Footprint of E-mail Spam Report" shows that that the electricity needed to process a single spam message results in 0.3 grams of carbon dioxide being released into the atmosphere - the equivalent of driving 3 feet in a car.

An analysis conducted by Google showed that the volume of unsolicited mails increased to the levels unseen since November when host provider McColo was disconnected. The report revealed that spam volumes in the second half of March returned to pre-McColo takedown levels. Besides, according to the analysis based on the inboxes Google manages for more than 50,000 businesses and 15 million business users the growth rate during the first three months of 2009 stood for 1.2% per day which is the highest it's been since early 2008.
