Facebook will enter phone industry via partnership with Skype

According to a report by All Things Digital social networking giant Facebook is about to set a partnership with Skype. Kara Swisher of All Things Digital says that the two companies are "poised to announce" a "significant and wide-ranging partnership." Some features of the new partnership include allowing users to SMS and call Facebook friends from Skype, as well as the integration of Facebook Connect into the Skype platform.

New 3G Skype for iPhones

A new client of Skype telephony has been launched for Apple’s iPhone. Skype announced the new application that can make calls to other Skype users over a 3G network.

While Skype-to-Skype calls over Wi-Fi are free those calls made over 3G after the end of 2010 will be charged. The company has not yet decided how to charge for the calls.

Skype and other VoIP services face a protectionist battle from Russian telcos

Russian businesses have teamed up for lobby against VoIP services such as Skype, saying that the technology constitutes a threat to national security, as well as their business. The lobby, called the Russian Union of Industrialists and Entrepreneurs, is working with Prime Minister Vladimir Putin's political party to draft "legal safeguards" against VoIP services. Besides, it reckons 40 % of telephone calls could be completed using VoIP services by 2012.
