Metal markets: gold advances, gaining over $4

Wednesday in Singapore, bullion prices climbed to within sight of a record above $1,250 an ounce struck the previous day, with dealers considering gold to be likely to consolidate before any charge higher.

Spot gold was at $1,238.05 an ounce by 6:24 GMT, up $4.42 from New York's notional close on Tuesday, when it rose as high as $1,251.20 marking its highest ever.

Fed stresses inflation risks

Senior U.S. Federal Reserve officials placed different emphasis on inflation risks on Thursday, with one warning failure to withdraw support policies soon enough could trigger inflation while another played down such risks.


Kansas City Federal Reserve Bank President Thomas Hoenig said the Fed should act sooner rather than later to contain longer-term inflation pressures and avoid sowing the seeds of a future crisis.

 Chinese Premier Wen Jiabao made an announcement on Sunday concerning the condition of global economy. He emphasized that China hopes the United States will keep its deficit to an appropriate size to ensure basic stability in the U.S. dollar exchange rate.

At a news conference in Egypt Wen said: "We have seen some signs of recovery in the U.S. economy ... I hope that as the largest economy in the world and an issuing country of a major reserve currency, the United States will effectively discharge its responsibilities.”

Asia would benefit from strength in China, Goldman Sachs revised forecast

Goldman Sachs chief economist for non-Japan Asia, Michael Buchanan said on Monday that the bank revised its projections for gross domestic product growth in Asia ex-Japan, which were already above consensus, to 5.6 % from 4.9 % this year and to 8.6 % from 7.8 % in 2010. 

Goldman said Asia would benefit from strength in China, which it now expects to grow 9.4 % this year and 11.9 % in 2010.

Beige Book survey of economic conditions through July 20 showed that labor markets across the country were "extremely soft," with little upward pressure on wages. Employers reported different methods of cutting pay in addition to, or instead of, freezing or lowering wages.

According to Ernst & Young ITEM Club summer forecast, UK gross domestic product is likely to decrease by 4.5 percent this year, the largest decline since 1945. A "subdued recovery" of half a percentage point is likely to follow for the UK economy next year, but a sustainable improvement will only be attained when world trade starts to pick up.

However, in March 2009, consumer debt decreased by $11.1 billion to $2.55trillion. As regards to debt in particular it dropped for the sixth month by $5.4 billion to$94.9 billion.
