Identity theft declines by 28%, but people lose more money now

According to new stats from Javelin Strategy & Research the number of victims of ID theft has declined by over a quarter in the United States last year. However, individual victims lost more money on average than ever before.

Javelin Strategy & Research published the results of the annual survey of consumer fraud which showed that total annual reported fraud was down to $37 billion in 2010 from $56 billion in 2009, but the average out-of-pocket loss soared to $631 from $387, over 60% increase.

UK researchers want to know the extent of cyberstalking prevalence

British researchers launched a study to learn how many Brits have been affected by cyberstalking. Cyberstalking includes everything starting from having your ID stolen or your reputation damaged online, to being tracked by other on social networking sites.

The Electronic Communication Harassment Observation (Echo) survey was commissioned by Network for Surviving Stalking to uncover the true figures.

It is users themselves who help identity theft online, not social media?

According to the results from a new study conducted by the Ponemon Institute and sponsored by Experian's ProtectMyID.com it is users themselves often to blame for the private data theft as long as they are doing little to protect their personal information on social networks. The study showed that 80% of the polled express concern over security on the social media websites but still half of these users do nothing to wrestle fraud.

Javelin Strategy & Research in its latest research has stated that the volume of online sales has decreased by 21 billion in 2008. According to survey results only 45% are satisfied with the quality of the merchandise sold online and the time of shipping whereas 37% of consumers complained of late shipments and 28% of online customers found that the quality of the goods they received is below their expectations.

1.7 million Canadians fell victims to ID thief

The research conducted by the McMaster eBusiness Research Centre at the DeGroote School of Business that surveyed 3000 Canadians shows that, 1.7 million of them (app. 6.5% of the population) were victims of identity fraud last year. Total losses they incurred came up to about $150 million. Collectively 20 million hours were spent to resolve the cases.

Corporate America takes extra steps to detect and prevent fraud related to identity theft. It is also expected that American banks will develop better procedures to notify victims. It is the issue of their reputation and business quality. 

The new regulations against ID theft are known as the "red flag rules". They were authorized by the Fair and Accurate Credit Transactions (FACT) Act and were started a year ago.
