ICANN plans unlimited number of domain names creation

The Internet Corporation for Assigned Names and Numbers (ICANN) went before a Congressional panel today to defend its plan to create an unlimited number of new Internet domains (like.web, .food, etc.) I was a witness at the hearing, which made one thing clear: the “consensus” on new Internet domains is not as strong as ICANN would have us think.

Companies don’t know about new domains to be introduced by ICANN next year

According to a recent research 2/3 of businesses do not know that they can use their own name in place of domain extensions such as .com, .org, or .net when Internet domains are liberalized next year, reports Reuters. With the new rules companies like Microsoft and others will be able to control their own domain and better exploit their brands, and also counter cyber-squatters who use variations of brands on the 280 or so existing domain extensions.

$33.15 million were ruled to pay to Verizon, but who will do it?

Cybercrime never stops capitalizing on others' names and customers' credulity. A sad truth with that is ICANN's eternal incompetence of what is going on within the borders of the virtual space where it is expected to be at least an agency surrounded with the decent partners and clients if it cannot act as an arbitrator or regulator. This year Verizon filed a cybersquatting lawsuit against a shady domain aggregator OnlineNIC that registered hundreds of websites using the company's name and trademarks.
