Technology spending across the globe to achieve $3.672 trillion this year

Gartner released a new forecast that predicts the information technology spending to grow faster this year than previously expected. The growth will be boosted by strong demand for new telecom gear and for computing hardware, research firm Gartner said.

The research agency believes that the global IT market will growth by 7.1% this year to $3.672 trillion. It had earlier forecast 5.6 percent growth this year.

HP sues Oracle for Intel’s action

Hewlett-Packard launched a lawsuit against Oracle over Oracle’s decision to terminate developing software for Intel's Itanium processor, the chip used by HP in its high-end servers.

In its filing HP alleges that Oracle's March 22 decision to discontinue all future software development for Itanium violates "legally binding commitments" that Oracle made to HP and the companies' 140,000 joint customers.

HP trims earnings, increases costs, while Dell reports stable growth

Hewlett-Packard Co cut its 2011 earnings forecast while its rival Dell Inc reported another profit growth.

HP CEO Leo Apotheker vowed to invest heavily on hiring and expanding its services division -- everything from computer maintenance to consulting -- to recover from "missed opportunities" under predecessor Mark Hurd.

However, it did little good to the company shares which dropped more than 7% as investors fear that costs that had been previously controlled under Hurd would balloon and erase profits.

HP demonstrated a new series of devices on webOS platform including a tiny smartphone Veer, business phone the Pre3 and its first Palm tablet HP TouchPad.

13mm thick HP TouchPad features an iPad-esque 9.7-inch capacitive multitouch display, 1.3-megapixel front-facing webcam, 1.2GHz ARM-based Qualcomm dual-core processor, 802.11b/g/n Wi-Fi, and stereo speakers. The tablet comes with 16GB and 32GB of storage. It can do video calling and is specifically designed for multitasking.

According to the latest reports Hewlett-Packard Co will introduce smartphones in early 2011 using the webOS software it acquired through its $1.2 billion Palm buy earlier this year.

"You will see us coming early next year with new phones," Senior Vice President Eric Cador told an industry conference.

With the acquisition of Palm the company wanted to enter the fast-growing smartphone industry and get access to Palm's acclaimed webOS operating system.

ArcSight will be bought by HP for 1.5 billion

Hewlett-Packard has affirmed it has agreed to buy ArcSight, a cybersecurity company, for $1.5 billion in cash.

This deal is anticipated to be closed by the end of the calendar year.

The stock has added about 24% in value since The Wall Street Journal reported that company had put itself up for sale on August 26.

Hewlett-Packard has come to a settlement agreement with the US Department of Justice to pay the US government US$55 million. The fine comes as HP allegedly defrauded the U.S. General Service Administration and other agencies by paying kickbacks to systems integrators in exchange for recommendations that agencies purchase HP products.

Apart from this, the settlement also resolves government claims that a 2002 contract HP had with the GSA was defectively priced because the company provided incomplete information to GSA contracting officers during negotiations, the DOJ said.

Having joined the choir of vendors which are planning to produce a computer tablet LG followed HP sample and discarded Windows 7 as a platform for its device. LG decided to built its tablet on a mobile OS.

According to the latest reports LG plans to manufacture tablets on the Android mobile OS. The table will run Android 2.2 and is projected to be available by the end of 2010.
