The last settlement related to the data breach has been achieved by Heartland Payment Systems. The payment processor has agreed to pay up to $5 million to Discover Financial Services in relation to a massive data compromise that hit the company in 2008.
Last January the payment processing firm revealed that malicious software in its processing system had been found, potentially compromising the card data of millions of people. |

US fifth largest payment processor Heartland Payment Systems announced that it had installed its E3 terminals across, 1,020 merchant locations since commercially launching the industry-leading end-to-end encryption technology on May 24 at the 2010 National Restaurant Association Hotel-Motel Show in Chicago. As is known from the company reports E3 technology is developed to secure credit and debit card data against interception rendering it useless to cyber crooks. |

It has been revealed that the infamous hacker Albert Gonzalez, who along with other individuals stood behind a data theft scheme that hit TJX, Office Max, Hannaford Brothers, 7-Eleven and Heartland Payment Systems, was paid by the US Secret Service $75,000 a year.
The US government hired Gonzales to help gather information on bank card thieves and report those findings to federal agents. Starting 2004 Gonzalez received money from the Secret Service to report information about credit card thieves he met online. |

Heartland Payment Systems gained an approval of its application with the New Jersey Federal Court on Monday. The payment processor asked for an order to show cause against VeriFone Holdings Inc. An expedited hearing on Heartland‘s injunction on its Lanham Act false-advertising claims was scheduled for December 7. Meantime, VeriFone’s request to transfer these claims to the Northern District of California was denied by the court. Besides, VeriFone took down the website that was using the Heartland name to lure Heartland customers.

On Monday a federal grand jury in New Jersey indicted Albert “Segvec” Gonzalez along with two unnamed Russian conspirators for allegedly stealing more than 130 million credit and debit card numbers in what U.S. authorities said they believe is the largest hacking and identity theft case ever prosecuted.

Tuesday, Heartland Payment Systems, leading provider of credit/debit/prepaid card processing, payroll, check management and payment services, published its second quarter results.
Thus it was unveiled that, Heartland’s GAAP net loss made up $2.6 million or $0.07 per share.
Results for the second quarter are after $19.4 million (pre-tax), or $0.32 per share, of various expenses, accruals and reserves, all of which are attributable to the processing system intrusion.
