In late Tuesday trading the Chinese search engine, Baidu, shares surged as the company unveiled results that beat Wall Street anticipations and boosted its guidance for the first quarter.

Baidu reported it earned $1.88 per share in its Q4, compared to $1.22 a share this time last year.

 Goldman Sachs reported on Thursday that it third quarter earnings amounted over $3 billion. In the statement the company said that fixed income, commodities and currency trading buoyed its profits for the second straight quarter.

Meantime, heroic achievements of the investment company had little impression on the investors as its revenue from mergers and acquisitions operations showed a sharp fall that reflected the general slowness in takeover activity.

A survey released by AFL-CIO, a federation of labor unions, showed that one if four young U.S. workers does not earn enough money to pay their bills, more than twice as many as a decade ago. Fewer than 1/3 of young workers earn enough to pay their bills and save some money as well, while 10 years ago that number was more than half.

According to a new survey of 73 cities around the world conducted by the Swiss bank UBS, French people are working least, while Cairo and Seoul citizens spend most hours at work. 

Thus, in Lyon people spend at work about 1,582 hours per year and in Paris - 1,594, compared to an average amount of 1,902 in the surveyed cities. At the same time, in Cairo people worked 2,373 hours, while in Seoul they worked 2,312 hours.

Wall Street expectations on the earnings and income of e-commerce giant eBay were beaten on Wednesday owing to cost cuts and strong growth at its Skype telephone and PayPal payments divisions, that pushed its stock higher, as Reuters reported. However, eBay reported a lower quarterly net profit, sales and margins because of the weak global economic state and international sales affected by a stronger U.S. dollar.
