WikiLeaks files official lawsuit against Visa and MasterCard with the EU

WikiLeals filed an official complaint with the European Commission against Visa and MasterCard on allegations the credit card networks reject processing donations to the whistleblower website. The complaint was filed in association with Icelandic IT company DataCell.

Visa and MasterCard blocked WikiLeaks from collecting funds from donors in December 2010.

According to the filing submitted with the Directorate-General for Competition of the European Commission, Visa and MasterCard breached antitrust provisions set out by Articles 101 and 102 of the EU Treaty.

UK is donating more actively with the help of plastic cards

According to the UK Cards Association data, donations to charitable organizations on plastic cards reached £1.19 billion in 2008, that’s up 18% from £1.01 billion previous year.

Concerning the amount of donations carried out trough the plastic cards total increase of 13% was reflected from 2007 to 2008. Particularly, debit cards donations grew by 16%, from 13 million in 2007 to 15.1 million in 2008, at the same time number of credit card cash contributions showed growth from 9.6 million in 2007 to 10.5 million in 2008, that is a 9% annual increase.

Pocit Elect, a payment system similar to that used by Barack Obama

A number of political parties in South Africa adopted a mobile payment system similar to that used by US president-elect Barack Obama to further his campaign. The parties as well will use the payment solution, known as Pocit Elect, to financially boost their campaigns. Gerrie van Zyl, CEO of Tradebridge, the holding company for Pocit Elect cellphone payment system, reports that within the first three weeks of initial sign-ups, around 100 cellphone payments were coming in every day.

More than 3 million people donated for Obama's campaign through the Internet

In total, more than 3 million people donated for Obama - twice as many as any other presidential candidate in history. In fact, Barack Obama has 2.5 million supporters on his page on a social networking site and more than 1.5 million people signed up at the site created just for the campaign.
