Many US federal .gov domain names are insecure

IID (Internet Identity), a provider of technology and services that help organizations secure Internet presence, announced in its “Q3 State of DNS Report” that it has identified major online security holes for U.S. government organizations. The report states that major part of Federal agency run .gov domains are not signing their DNS (Domain Name System) with DNSSEC (Domain Name Security Extensions) despite a December 2009 Federal deadline for adoption. DNSSEC is designed to ensure DNS entries

DNS system is insecure and "can stop any time”? Storm in the cup of tea?

This week addressing the Government Advisory Committee meeting Rod Beckstrom, CEO of the Internet Corporation for Assigned Names and Numbers stated that more concerted efforts are needed to protect the DNS because it is under more attacks, is fragile and vulnerable, and "can stop any time."

Beckstrom touched upon DNS abuse cases by some unspecified countries and promised to write to GAC members for more information and advice on DNS in their countries.

Twitter was hit by DNS hijacking attack

A DNS hijacking attack left Twitter temporarily affected for about an hour early on Friday.

The initial attack has left many users scratching their heads while spreading the belief that Twitter's servers themselves were commandeered by hackers in the name of the "Iranian Cyber Army".

ICANN is no longer a US controlled organization

 On Wednesday September 30 an 11-year series of memorandums of understanding between ICANN and the US Department of Commerce expired. The same day the Internet Corporation for Assigned Names and Numbers reached a new agreement with the DOC that allows the nonprofit greater independence, while giving more countries oversight of the organization.

America recommended by NRO to let ICANN go

As the US pursues to retain overseeing of ICANN Number Resource Organization (NRO) addressed the authorities saying that it would be better to end the collaboration between the Internet Corporation of Assigned Names and Numbers (ICANN) and the US Department of Commerce.

As the agreement between US Department of Commerce and ICANN under which they control DNS (Domain Name System) expires on 30 September Europe recommended that the US and ICANN end their partnership so that ICANN could become an independent organization.

CheckFree lost control of its domains due to attack from Eastern Europe

Online payment service CheckFree has lost control of at least two of its domains on Tuesday in an attack that sent customers to servers run by a notorious crime gang believed to be based in Eastern Europe.

One of the readers of the magazine Richard D. reported receiving a bogus secure sockets layer certificate when attempting to log in to his Mycheckfree.com account early Tuesday morning.
