Diners Club opens its credit card brand franchise in Russia

Diners Club International, a subsidiary of Discover Financial Services, has partnered with Russian Standard Bank (RSB) to form a new Diners Club International franchise in Russia. RSB will assume all responsibility for the Diners Club brand and business in Russia and Ukraine in issuing and acquiring.

BofA, Capital One and Discover report the credit card charge-off figures

Bank of America and Capital One released their credit card reports which show consumers were stressed through the holiday shopping season. Discover Financial also reported its figures.

Bank of America had the highest default and delinquency rates of the three companies that reported early on Friday. The rate of charge-offs here increased last month to 13.53% from 13.00% in November. Credit card delinquencies fell to 7.44% in December from 7.69% the previous month.

Discover Financial reports higher income at the expense of litigation settlement

On Thursday Discover Financial Services (DFS), a credit card issuer and electronic payment services company, uncovered the results for the first quarter 2009. The report showed that the company had higher first quarter profits owing to a gain from an antitrust litigation settlement. Meantime the company also announced that it reduced its quarterly dividend to enhance its capital base.

This week Discover Financial Services announced the appointment of its chief executive officer as chairman of the board. Former chairman Dennis Dammerman who is leaving the company to serve as director of American International Group Inc. will be succeeded by David Nelms. Net income in the third quarter 2008 was $322 million, or $2.47 per diluted share, excluding a special item, and a net loss of $194 million, or $1.49 per diluted share, including the special item -- a $515.5 million net after-tax charge related to an antitrust litigation settlement between MasterCard and Discover Financial Services.
