Mozilla wants to rival Google Chrome: four Firefoxes will come in 2011

In a move to compete with Google which makes updated browsers every six to eight weeks Mozilla announced that it is planning to release four new versions of Firefox this year shortening thus the browser’s cycle. Up to present days Mozilla has released updated versions every 12 to 18 months.

The draft of Mozilla’s Firefox roadmap for 2011 shows that one of the non-profit entity’s priorities is to "ship our new technology to users in smaller bundles, more frequently."

Ixaris has launched a new product called Ixaris Opn (should be pronounced as open). The new service is an application development platform to allow developers to add payment applications for financial institutions and specialized market segments.

There is no sophisticated integration platform with Ixaris Opn which can be easily brought to market. Developers can use the platform for creating customized payment apps that can incorporate mainstream payment networks such as Visa or MasterCard prepaid cards, and bank transfers via SWIFT.

Jeff Kinder, Yahoo's senior vice president for media products and solutions talking on the sidelines of a Yahoo Open Hack Day in Bangalore said that the company is considering investments in hackers with good ideas and technologies as it pursues to improve its position in the market.

"We are open to many ways of having a stake in creative young companies," said Kinder, adding that the company neither has a fund earmarked for this purpose, nor a definite model or set of criteria for such investments.

MasterCard is releasing its Open Application Programming Interfaces (Open APIs) for third–party and independent software developers. The card network company reported that under its new program developers will be able to create a new wave of e-commerce and mobile payment applications.

Microsoft declined the release of Windows Mobile 6.5 SDK after accidental post

Microsoft pulled its Windows Mobile 6.5 SDK, software developers kit, that it accidentally published Friday.


Developers discovered the SDK on company’s Download site. One, Joel Ivory Johnson, downloaded it and reports that it includes Widget tools and emulators for version 6.5.3, the next update to the OS. Along with the another developer he failed using the SDK, indicating that it likely was not ready for release.

Microsoft might be planning to release the SDK next month at the Mobile World Congress.

Yahoo announced on their developer network blog that their Shopping API will be terminated on March 11, 2010. The company decided to enter into an agreement with PriceGrabber to power the same thing for the Yahoo Shopping area.

 
Thus, Yahoo shuts down their own service and besides, those developers who currently use Yahoo Shopping API have no possibility to directly transition to a new platform. As Yahoo notes, any developer that wishes to continue to display results from Yahoo Shopping will have to apply to PriceGrabber to get permission.

Oracle's acquisition of MySQL is causing MySQL developers and practitioners to worry as they expect the project to stop just like everyone had expected after the previous acquisitions of Oracle. 

Looking back at the previous acquisitions of the company it can be easily remembered that when Oracle had acquired Innobase the company that makes the InnoDB storage engine for MySQL in October of 2005, there were similar worries that it was the end for MySQL in enterprise applications. However, Oracle continued to support and develop InnoDB.
