Eurocom launches a 4TB laptop on Core i7 and Xeon 5600 chips

A laptop with a 4TB of storage and Intel's fastest six-core processor was announced by a Canadian PC maker Eurocom. The laptop dubbed Panther 2.0 was developed to be a replacement for workstation to run high-end graphics and CAD (computer-aided design) programs.

The 4TB of storage may exceed those offered with most desktops and even server computers. It is allocated in four slots, with a separate drive in each. Processor options include Intel's Core i7 Extreme Edition or Xeon 5600 chips, which have up to six processor cores and run at speeds of up to 3.33GHz.

According to the latest study from Nielsen, estimated online activity of 200,000 users, e-mail use on the desktop dropped dramatically, falling from 12% to 8.3% in 2010 from the previous year.

These figures showed desktop e-mail usage to fall into third place behind social gaming like Farmville.

Apple updates its iMac desktops with Intels’ latest-generation chips

Apple has upgraded its all-in-one iMac line of desktop computers using the latest-generation chips from Intel Corp and better graphics aiming to gain more share in the PC market.

The iMac, starts at $1,199 for a model with a 21.5-inch screen, while the 27-inch version starts at $1,699. The new iMacs are available today.

At the weekends Dell unveiled its new Inspiron R laptops for US customers which had been first launched several months ago in other parts of the world including Australia and India.

The new R models are designed to perform multiple functions which range from replacing desktop PCs, to serving up multimedia home entertainment, to acting as take-along workstations on visits to Starbuck's. However, functionality is not the only advantage featuring the new series, the laptops have a nice appearance with the covers coming in four different brushed metal finishes with chrome accents.

AMD gains more share in the processors market at the expense of Intel’s loss

According to the study by IDC the share of Advanced Micro Devices in the processors market increased at the expense of Intel during the fourth quarter of 2009.

IDC reports that Advanced Micro Devices across the globe "achieved all time record levels for a single quarter.” Microprocessor shipments climbed by 31.3% in Q$ 2009 as compared with the same period in 2008.

 Micron, a memory making company, announced the launch of the first solid-state drive fitted with a 6Gb/s Sata 3.0 connector. Its new RealSSD C300 is presented as "the fastest drive for notebook and desktop personal computers" The company also states that the C300 is faster than any other SSD connected by a 3Gb/s Sata link into the bargain.

Micron's new SSD has a read throughput up to 355MB/s and a write throughput of up to 215MB/s.

Intel has plans to accelerate the introduction of its new 32nm processors scheduled for release in late 2009. The company says it is skipping 45nm chips that were also expected to arrive later this year. According to Intel the launch of Westmere will “deemphasize” 45nm Auburndale chips that were scheduled to co-exist with its new 32nm line in 2009.
