US consumers will spend less during this shopping season, survey found

American consumers shopped more for bargains at the start of the U.S. holiday season and spent significantly less than a year ago, according to early data released on Sunday.

Consumers said they will have spent nearly 8 percent less on average, or about $343 per person, over the weekend that includes U.S. Thanksgiving Day, Black Friday and runs through Sunday, according to the National Retail Federation.

Which of online marketing tactics influences customers more?

Lightspeed Research and the Internet Advertising Bureau conducted a study that determined which of online marketing strategies are better perceived by the consumers. The survey found that younger groups of Internet subscribers prefer advertisements which offer money-saving deals, entertainment and exclusive information. Meantime, older users said they favor relevant and useful ads.

Ketchum and USC Annenberg Strategic Public Relations Center survey conducted in late 2008 showed that Traditional media usage by Internet users in the US remains steady in 2008. However, the use of shopping and social networking websites rose harshly in the same period. 

For instance, less than two-thirds of respondents watched major network TV news, which is the same rate as in 2007.

A survey conducted by VeriSign shows that 85% of consumers consider trusting the site is most important when sharing confidential information while interacting on a Web site. 

Some statistics received from the survey are: 9% consider competitive pricing to be the most important, while another 5% said that convenience and ease to use was the most important. 93% of respondents stated they would not transact on sites that were unsecured.
