China initiates another trade dispute with the United States

 China intends to take steps that could cause higher tariffs on imports of autos made by the U.S. automakers GM, Chrysler and Ford. Steve Collins, president of industry trade group the American Automotive Policy Council, announced Wednesday that China is expected to begin an investigation under anti-dumping laws into automakers industries’ business practices as soon as next week. China intends to slap tariffs on U.S. auto imports if the investigation discovers that the companies receive government subsidies, or sell products in China at below-market prices.

Auto giants lose their compensation, bosses get their salaries cut

The government whacked the compensation of top executives at General Motors Co., Chrysler LLC and their financial arms Thursday.

Kenneth Feinberg, an independent official named to make sure taxpayer money isn't feathering the nests of company bigwigs, also ordered deep cuts for insurance giant AIG and financial houses Bank of America and Citigroup.

In metro Detroit, the order was a sobering reminder of Washington's involvement in the car business.

Money lent to General Motors and Chrysler is unlikely to be repaid to taxpayers

Taxpayers face losses on a significant portion of the $81 billion in government aid provided to the auto industry, an oversight panel said in a report to be released Wednesday.

The Congressional Oversight Panel did not provide an estimate of the projected loss in its latest monthly report on the $700 billion Troubled Asset Relief Program. But it said most of the $23 billion initially provided to General Motors Corp. and Chrysler LLC late last year is unlikely to be repaid.

What US automaker makes drivers happier

Tuesday the University of Michigan unveiled the results of the car sales research in the US, reflected sales to fall in 2009 compared to 2008 volumes, while consumer satisfaction remained at an all-time high.

Some of the biggest gains in consumer satisfaction was seen particularly in Detroit, with Ford Motor sales inched up by 5% compared to 2008 sales, followed closely by Chrysler, that rose by 4% and General Motors gaining 2% in sales.

GMAC Financial Services reported on Tuesday a wider second-quarter loss of $3.9 billion as it transformed from an arm of General Motors into an independent bank. The bulk of the latest quarterly loss stems from a $1.6 billion charge related to company`s mortgage business Revenue during the quarter dropped 28% to $1.27 billion from $1.76 billion. In the year-ago period, the company posted a loss of $2.48 billion.

Ford auto sales best in 10 months

U.S. automaker's vehicle sales in May get to 24%, but retreat narrows as it sold more vehicles than it has in the last 10 months. Ford Motor Co. reported its U.S. auto sales fell less than expected in May marking its best performance since July 2008. Ford said total domestic vehicle sales fell 24.3% compared to a year earlier.

No bailout for Chrysler

The days of the big bailouts for various companies who were squandering their profits are over. Chrysler LLC will find out by 11:59 pm tonight whether they can work a deal with their creditors or if they will need to file Chapter 11 bankruptcy to get out of their $6.9 billion debt. Talks with the Treasury Department  broke down early this morning, and the only way to salvage this is to convince 100% of their creditors to agree to the deal.

On Tuesday independent oversight report on the Treasury Department's corporate rescue fund said, Chrysler LLC will get $500 million through the end of this month and General Motors Corp will obtain up to $5 billion through May as the government bailouts. With this aid the Obama administration intends to help Chrysler to reach an alliance with Fiat. As for GM, the administration wants to help the company’s restructure outside of bankruptcy.

As auto sales in the U.S. showed a smaller than expected decrease of 37% in March industry executives were encouraged to hope that car market is nearing a bottom.
