Alibaba is about to launch mobile OS

A Chinese ecommerce group Alibaba Group is developing a mobile operating system which will be launched in the third quarter, reports the Wall Street Journal.

The mobile operating system, to be developed by Alibaba's cloud computing unit, will also provide mobile applications, the paper said quoting an unnamed source close to the matter.

Baidu, Chinese top search engine, is also developing its own mobile operating system based on Google’s Android platform, according to recent reports in the local media sources

Alibaba splits Taobao into three companies

On Thursday Alibaba Group said that it has reorganized its ecommerce business Taobao, largest ecommerce website in China. The business has been split into three separate services.

In Q1 of the year Taobao shared 70% of all online sales in China and it has been valued by Goldman Sachs at about $7 billion.

Effective from Thursday the decision splits the company into three services: search engine eTao, business-to-consumer website Taobao Mall and consumer-to-consumer website Taobao.com.

The popular Chinese Internet shopping portal Taobao.com started constructing its Taobao City development in Yuhang District of Hangzhou. The project will approximately cost CNY1.36 billion. Lu Weixing, spokesperson of Taobao.com, said that the investment is mainly coming from its parent company Alibaba Group's previous investment. It should be recalled that last year Alibaba Group had announced plans to invest CNY5 billion in Taobao.com.
