China Telecom launches iPhones for its users late in 2011

China Telecom Corp Ltd will offer its customers the Apple iPhone by the end of the current year, report the sources familiar with the matter.

The introduction of the Jesus Phone is expected to help China Telecom, which is the smallest operator in China, attract more 3G users.

"The reason telecom operators are fighting for the iPhone business is because everybody is trying to grab as many 3G users as possible," said Jane Wang, an analyst at UK-based research firm Ovum. "The only way to keep costs down is to build up such a user base."

60% of the world to access 4G Internet

A new report from ABI Research says that over 60% of the world’s population will be able to access some form of 4G mobile broadband technology by 2015. According to ABI analyst Neil Strother between LTE and WiMAX, 4G technologies will reach an estimated 4.4 billion people within the next five years. This will make up more than double the 2 billion people today who currently have access to 3G mobile data technologies such as HSPA or EV-DO Rev. A, he says. ABI estimates that around 770 million users around the world today have access to either WiMAX or LTE services.

North Korean only 3G network grows in usage

North Korea’s only 3G wireless operator Koryolink recorded increase in its sales in the first three months of the current year as a result of expanded network coverage and continued demand for its service.

As reported by Orascom Telecom, Egyptian company that owns 75% of Koryolink, at the end of March North Korean wireless carrier had 125,661 subscribers, a gain just under 34,000 subscribers over the quarter.

Hackers have come to the proof of concept that a (jailbroken) iPad 3G can send SMS text messages, and work with other wireless carrier's networks. While Apple says the iPad Wi-Fi + 3G comes without a carrier lock on AT&T's network still the differences between the networks result in that user will have to do with only EDGE speeds.

One more problem is that in order to use a T-Mobile data contract on an iPad, you will have to do some DIY hackery and trim a traditional SIM card with a scissor.
