Scammers no longer need skimming, they can buy fake ATM on eBay

While many cardholders today are used to run across ATM frauds like skimming devices and cameras when withdrawing money there are still plenty of ways invented by criminals to scam unwitting victims. As it was recently reported by one expert Boston scammers may use fraudulent ATMs that as it turns out could be bought right from eBay or Craigslist.

After searching Craigslist for a seller Robert Siciliano, Identity Theft Expert, found a bar owner looking to liquidate assets. He paid $750 for the ATM, and after a hacker friend looked over the accompanying manual, he was able to get 1,000 account numbers to print out.

He warns: “You can protect yourself from these types of scams by paying attention to your statements. Refute unauthorized transactions within 60 days. Consider never using a debit card again, since credit cards are safer. When using an ATM, pay close attention to details, and look for anything that seems out of place. If your card gets stuck in the machine or you notice anything odd about the appearance of the machine, such as wires, double sided tape, error messages, a missing security camera, or the machine seems unusually old and run down, don’t use it. Don’t use just any ATM. Instead, look for ATMs in more secure locations. Cover your pin!!”
