Globe Telecom, a leading telecommunications company in the Philippines with its "e-wallet" service GCASH decided to cooperate with Western Union to increase the accessibility and lower the cost of micro-remittances. There are about 200 million people in the world work abroad their company and according to the statistics the Philippines is the fourth-largest receiver of remittances. The overall amount of transfers received by Filipino in 2007 was $17 billion.
By joining the efforts Globe Telecom and Western union can make the procedure of money transfer for Philippine cheaper and more affective. Mobile banking becomes more and more popular in the world today and Western Union effectively collaborates with mobile providers. The Mobile Money Transfer service allows the customers to remit money from and to mobile wallets and will offer Western Union Agent locations to make cash-to-mobile and mobile-to-cash transactions.
This agreement with Philippine company is a part of the pilot program of Western Union and the GSM Association that represents the trade union of more than 700 GSM mobile telecommunication providers of the world. This program aims to promote the development of cross-border mobile money transfer services and to eliminative inconvenience of state borders.
