Citi, Unionpay Chinese retail customers will be able to use new dedicated Renminbi (RMB) debit card issued recently by Citibank China. The initiative was introduced at the same time when Citibank and the Chinese bankcard association China Unionpay (CUP) entered into the strategic cooperation agreement. China Unionpay provides Citibank cardholders with access to CUP’s vast ATM network which comprises 140,000 machines on Chinese territory and 380,000 more machines across 45 countries.

The card is available in the form of a regular and a gold debit card. The gold debit card is designed specially for Citigold customers. With the new cards customers can make purchases at over a million Chinese merchants’ desks and in 27 countries worldwide.

In addition Citi and CUP have agreements with two local mobile services providers (China Mobile and China Unicom). This provides Renminbi debit cards with the option for mobile banking operations. With this additional feature customers can check their account balance, pay their bills and make various purchases via their mobile phones.
