Twitter becomes main source of reports on Osama bin Laden’s death

While many people around the globe gathered together on special squares to express their joy on the death of the Al Qaeda leader Osama bin Laden there were those who expressed their feelings on the Internet. Before the announcement made by the US President Barack Obama people learned the news from the microblogging service Twitter.

The news dominated the social networking site once it became official.

Seven of the top ten topics on Twitter were related to the announcement and included such headlines as "Obama," "Navy Seals," and "Abbottabad," according to WhatTheTrend.com. A Facebook page called "Osama Bin Laden is dead" quickly gained more than 200,000 fans.

Mashable blog reported that out of its 6,568 audience 43% had learned the news via Twitter. Nearly 18% learned from Facebook, while 14% saw the news on TV.

"Twitter is our Times Square on this victory day." journalist Jeff Jarvis tweeted.
