Avast marks all websites in the World Wide Web as malicious

Avast, a largest antivirus scanner, brought its apologies this week for wrongly defining most of the web as malicious.

Instead of analyzing and determining the contents of every website the software marked all websites with scripts or frames including Avast’s own support forums as malicious as a result of a wrong definition update.

Having realized the mistake the Czech Republic based company issued a fixed definition base within an hour and expressed its apologies:

Virus definition update 110411-1 contained an error that resulted in a good number of innocent sites being flagged as infected. Generally, all sites with a script in a specific format were affected.

It is estimated that about 130 million people use Avast’s antivirus across the globe. Like AVG and Panda Labs the company provides basic antivirus features for free while making money on the sales of security suites with added features and scanners to companies, mostly targeting small businesses.
